From Severe Back Pain to Walking Comfortably Again: 33-Year-Old Woman Undergoes Spine Surgery Through Just 7–9 mm Incision

Noida, Oct 30: For a 33-year-old lady, something as simple as walking had become a painful challenge. For nearly six months, she had been living with severe lower back pain that travelled down her right leg, making everyday movement and walking increasingly difficult.

From Severe Back Pain to Walking Comfortably Again: 33-Year-Old Woman Undergoes Spine Surgery Through Just 7–9 mm Incision

What made her case particularly challenging was that the problem was not just ordinary back pain. Investigations revealed slipped discs at her lower spine (L4-L5 lumbar), along with narrowing of the spinal canal that was putting pressure on the nerves responsible for movement and sensation in the legs.

Doctors at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Noida Extension, decided to treat the problem using an advanced endoscopic spine surgery technique. Unlike conventional spine surgery, which may require a larger incision to reach the affected area, the procedure was performed through an incision of just 7–9 mm — roughly the width of a small pencil.

The surgery involved relieving the pressure on the affected nerves at the L4-L5 level. Using a specialised endoscope, the surgeons were able to reach the affected area through the tiny opening and decompress the nerves while minimising damage to the surrounding muscles and tissues.

A challenging case made possible through a focussed targeted approach

According to the treating team, the patient’s body build made the case particularly challenging. In a conventional approach, reaching the spine in such patients can require greater exposure and more tissue dissection. The endoscopic approach, however, allowed the surgeons to directly target the area treating the problem without creating a large surgical opening.

Following the procedure, the patient experienced significant relief from her back and leg pain. Her difficulty in walking also improved, allowing her to resume movement with greater comfort as early as the very next day. The minimally invasive procedure, performed through a tiny incision, resulted in minimal scarring and enabled early discharge and a quicker return to work.

Dr. Ankit Agrawal, Senior Consultant – Neurosurgeon, Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Noida Extension
, said,

“This case demonstrates how advances in endoscopic spine surgery are changing the way we approach selected patients with severe nerve compression. Our aim was not only to relieve the pressure on the nerves but to do so while causing as little disruption to the surrounding tissues as possible.”

He further added,

“Patients often associate spine surgery with large incisions, prolonged recovery and significant muscle damage. With modern supra-minimally invasive techniques, selected cases can be treated through very small openings. However, every patient is different, and the suitability of an endoscopic procedure depends on the condition, location of the problem and overall clinical assessment.”

This case highlights an important development in modern spine care that with endoscopic techniques and careful patient selection, surgeons can now access and treat certain spinal conditions through extremely small openings, potentially reducing tissue damage and helping patients get back to their daily lives sooner.

Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Noida Extension, continues to offer advanced surgical and minimally invasive treatment options across multiple specialties, with a focus on combining medical expertise with modern technology and patient-centric care.
