India Strengthens Global 6G Role with Early Push for Secure and Open Networks
India has taken an important step towards strengthening its position in next-generation telecommunications by endorsing the global Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security.
The move brings India into a group of more than 20 countries working together to promote open, interoperable, secure and resilient 6G networks. The initiative is aimed at shaping the future of wireless communication while encouraging innovation, technological cooperation and stronger digital security.
India's early participation could give its technology companies, researchers and policymakers a greater opportunity to contribute to the global standards that will define 6G networks. The country has set an ambition to contribute around 10 per cent of global 6G standards and patents, reflecting its broader effort to become a stronger player in advanced telecom technology.
The Department of Telecommunications will coordinate India's participation and follow-up activities with government agencies, industry, academic institutions and other stakeholders. This will help bring together research, innovation and industry capabilities as the country prepares for the next phase of wireless technology.
The 6G push is expected to go beyond faster internet speeds. Future networks are likely to support technologies such as artificial intelligence, connected devices, smart infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and next-generation digital services.
For India, greater involvement in 6G development could also create opportunities for domestic telecom manufacturing, research and development, intellectual property and high-skilled employment. It can further strengthen the country's digital technology ecosystem and support the development of indigenous telecom solutions.
India's global 6G efforts also build on the work of the Bharat 6G Alliance, which brings together industry, academia and other stakeholders to support research, innovation and the development of future telecom technologies.
With 6G expected to emerge commercially in the 2030s, India's early engagement gives the country an opportunity to move beyond being a major telecommunications market and play a larger role in developing the technologies and standards that will shape the next generation of global connectivity.
