India’s Merchandise Exports Hit Record High in July as Trade Deficit Widens

New Delhi, Aug 13: India’s merchandise exports recorded a strong performance in July, reaching a record $44.24 billion, as exporters continued to find opportunities in global markets despite a challenging international environment.

The rise in exports comes alongside a widening merchandise trade deficit, which stood at $31.98 billion during the month. Imports climbed to $76.22 billion, reflecting strong demand for energy, industrial inputs, raw materials and other goods.

The July numbers highlight the contrasting forces shaping India’s external trade. Exporters are benefiting from steady overseas demand, while the rising import bill continues to put pressure on the overall trade balance.

Exporters maintain momentum

Indian businesses have continued to expand their presence in international markets, supported by growing manufacturing capabilities and a wider range of value-added products.

Strong shipments across areas such as electronics, engineering products, petroleum products and marine goods have helped support overall export growth. Exporters are also looking at new markets and strengthening supply chains to manage uncertainty in global trade.

The performance is particularly notable as businesses continue to deal with geopolitical tensions, changes in shipping routes and fluctuations in energy and commodity prices.

Imports remain a concern

The sharp rise in imports has been the main factor behind the wider trade gap. Higher energy requirements and demand for imported machinery, raw materials and consumer products have contributed to the increase.

However, strong imports can also be a sign of economic activity, particularly when businesses are investing in production and consumers are maintaining demand.

During the first four months of FY27, India’s merchandise exports reached $173.78 billion, while imports stood at $292.38 billion.

Focus turns to sustaining growth

The latest figures offer encouragement to Indian exporters, but maintaining this momentum will require continued efforts to improve competitiveness, reduce logistics costs and expand access to international markets.

Greater value addition, stronger domestic supply chains and diversification into new export destinations could help India strengthen its position in global trade.

The July figures ultimately present a balanced picture: India’s export sector is showing strong momentum, while the growing import bill remains a challenge. The ability to sustain export growth and manage the trade gap will be an important focus for policymakers and businesses in the months ahead.
