India Tourism Eyes Next Growth Phase with Private Investment and New Destinations

BusinessBhumika Lenka01 Oct 2026

New Delhi, Oct 1: India is preparing for a new phase of tourism growth, with greater private investment, development of emerging destinations and improved visitor experiences emerging as key priorities for the sector.

Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat highlighted these priorities while addressing the ASSOCHAM National Tourism Conclave 2026 in New Delhi. He stressed the need to expand tourism beyond established destinations and create a stronger ecosystem that can support investment, employment and local economic activity.

The focus is increasingly shifting from simply attracting more tourists to building destinations that offer better infrastructure, distinctive experiences and smoother services for visitors.

Investment to strengthen tourism infrastructure

Greater private-sector participation is expected to play an important role in expanding tourism infrastructure across the country. Investments in hotels, hospitality facilities, connectivity, convention infrastructure and destination services can help improve the capacity of emerging tourism centres.

Stronger collaboration between the government and private industry can also help accelerate the development of tourism projects while creating opportunities for local businesses and communities.

New destinations to broaden India's tourism map

India's tourism potential extends well beyond its traditional travel hubs. Developing lesser-known destinations can help distribute tourist activity more widely and create new sources of income for local communities.

Segments such as spiritual tourism, wellness, wildlife, rural tourism, cruise tourism and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) are also gaining attention as the industry looks to offer travellers a wider range of experiences.

Improved road, rail, air and other forms of connectivity can further support the development of these emerging destinations.

Visitor experience becomes a priority

Along with infrastructure, the quality of the visitor experience is becoming increasingly important. Clean and well-managed destinations, reliable public facilities, safety, accessibility and efficient digital services can influence how travellers experience a destination.

Technology can also play a larger role, helping visitors discover destinations, plan journeys, access local services and provide feedback.

Tourism's wider economic impact

A stronger tourism ecosystem can generate benefits across several industries, including hospitality, transport, food services, handicrafts, retail and local entrepreneurship.

For smaller towns and rural destinations, tourism can create additional avenues for employment and help local enterprises participate in the wider travel economy.

As India looks to expand its tourism footprint, the combination of private investment, new destinations, better connectivity and improved visitor services is expected to remain central to the sector's growth agenda.
