Gold Hallmarking Fee Hiked to INR 75: What It Means for Jewellery Buyers

“The increase in hallmarking fees is something the jewellery industry will have to factor in, especially with the festive and wedding season now picking up. With the fee moving to Rs 75 per article, the impact is likely to be felt more in lightweight jewellery, where a fixed per-piece cost makes up a larger part of the overall value. At the same time, it is important for customers to understand that this does not mean an automatic Rs 30 increase in the price of every gold jewellery piece. The actual impact will depend on how jewellers manage this additional cost within their pricing structures. As an industry, we need to keep this transition transparent for customers and ensure that the quality and purity assurance that comes with hallmarking remains uncompromised. For buyers, a BIS hallmark and valid HUID continue to be important markers of trust, particularly when making high-value purchases during the festive and wedding season.”
