Global Markets Face Fresh Uncertainty as Oil Prices Rise and Tech Stocks Gain Momentum

New Delhi, Sep 8: Global financial markets are heading into a closely watched week as higher crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions and renewed buying in technology stocks influence investor sentiment.

US market futures showed a mixed trend, with Dow Jones futures and S&P 500 futures moving lower while Nasdaq-100 futures gained ground. The uneven movement reflects continued caution among investors as they assess developments in energy markets and the broader economic outlook.

Crude oil remained one of the key drivers of market sentiment. Oil prices moved higher amid growing tensions between the US and Iran, raising concerns about the impact of geopolitical developments on global energy supplies. A sustained rise in crude prices could increase input and transportation costs for businesses while adding to inflationary pressure.

Despite the uncertainty, the US stock market managed to recover from earlier losses last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.3 per cent, while the S&P 500 edged up 0.1 per cent. The Nasdaq Composite performed better, gaining around 4 per cent during the week.

Technology and semiconductor stocks were among the strongest performers. Nvidia, Micron Technology, Sandisk, SK Hynix and Taiwan Semiconductor all recorded gains, reflecting continued investor interest in artificial intelligence, advanced chips and high-growth technology businesses.

Nvidia gained nearly 5.9 per cent over the week, while Sandisk and Micron also posted significant advances. The performance highlights the continuing importance of the semiconductor industry, particularly as demand for AI-related computing infrastructure remains a major theme for global investors.

Apple is another company expected to remain in focus this week. The technology giant is preparing for a major product event, with investors watching for announcements about new devices and possible developments in its product portfolio.

Meanwhile, US Treasury yields have also remained elevated. The 10-year Treasury yield reached a fresh 19-month high during the week, reflecting changing expectations around monetary policy and interest rates.

Inflation data due later this week will be closely monitored by financial markets. The upcoming Producer Price Index and Consumer Price Index figures could influence expectations about the Federal Reserve's next policy decision and, in turn, affect equities, bonds and currency markets.

For businesses, higher oil prices remain a key concern because rising energy costs can increase expenses across transportation, manufacturing and other sectors. At the same time, continued strength in technology and semiconductor companies is creating opportunities in areas linked to AI, computing, chips and digital infrastructure.

The global market outlook therefore remains balanced between optimism over technology-led growth and concerns over energy prices, inflation and geopolitical risks. Investors are likely to remain selective as they wait for fresh economic data and developments in global energy markets to determine the next phase of the market.
