CMAI Welcomes India-UK FTA, Sees Major Export Opportunities for Indian Apparel Industry

25th July 2025: The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) has welcomed the newly signed India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), calling it a major opportunity for the country’s apparel export sector. Although the 0% duty on exports to the UK will take effect only by the end of 2026, CMAI expects global buyers to begin groundwork and sourcing preparations well in advance.

With a large Indian diaspora and growing demand for ethnic and contemporary fashion, the UK offers strong export potential for Indian manufacturers—especially traditional players looking to expand globally.

Santosh Katariya, President of CMAI, stated, “Since UK apparel imports are likely to focus on luxury and high-end products, I’m confident Indian manufacturers can compete effectively.”

On the domestic front, the FTA will also allow duty-free imports from the UK. Rahul Mehta, Chief Mentor of CMAI, sees this as a positive challenge. “This will push Indian brands to raise their quality, service, and branding—ultimately benefiting the Indian consumer,” he said.

Overall, CMAI believes the FTA will drive innovation, global expansion, and higher standards across India’s apparel industry.
